Though I never quite liked citrus flavoured desserts and sweets, I seriously recommend the Viennese Jaffa (Cakes) by Marks and Spencer.
They are approximately four centimetres in diameter, with a layer of chocolate on top, stamped with the design of an orange slice. The base is typical Marks and Spencer viennese cookie, which I enjoy for its softness and fluffiness. The citrus goodness is sandwiched between those two layers.
Even for a non-orange believer (I verily prefer apple or strawberry), the syrupis somehow just nice. It’s neither too sweet, tangy nor citrus-y. The balance between these characteristics are just about right.
Upon taking a bite, you experience the softness of the chocolate and biscuit layers before the taste of orange arrives an instant later. This being a mini-review, and with lunch beckoning, I will keep my descriptions brief.
The syrup isn’t as viscous as what are probably imagining, nor is it of the consistency of a soft drink. But all I know is that it complements the chocolate really, really well. It adds that sort of sparkle to the taste and texture which the cocoa layer offers, and is in turn further supplemented by the glorious cake-y base.
Try leaving them in the fridge (not freezer). Each layer becomes harder and thicker and makes for a different experience all together. I love placing M & S’ viennese biscuits in the fridge for the same reason.
The only way to find out how good it really is, go buy a pack. Will post the price if I do find out – apologies; mom does all the shopping.
And oh yeah. Remember jennifer telling me in London about a court case involving the attempts in deciding if these jaffa cakes were cakes or biscuits, for taxation purposes. Will post the wikipedia article here soon.
