Linking Facebook to Twitter Tutorial

Submitted by faii on Wednesday, 11 February 200917 Comments

Facebook and TwitterMy earlier post detailed my rather brief search in finding a suitable method of integrating twitter with facebook.

So here’s a tutorial on my final solution.

Note: Most online searches result in the default Twitter App for Facebook. It does not allow you any control over what gets from twitter to facebook – every twit is automatically posted to your facebook status, save for @replies.

EDIT: just tried it, and this does not work if your twitter feed is protected. thanks for the comment twittering from mobile.

EDIT: So far, this solution seems to update at instantaneously, or at least near-instantaneously for me. Twitter’s app (i.e. the original, cumbersome one) updates via a half-hour refresh, so that’s another point loss then.

Step 1:

Click this link to the application’s main page.

Selective Facebook Application - Main Page

Step 2:

Register and add the application by entering your twitter username in the corresponding field on the application page.

Selective Facebook Application - Register

It is that simple. There is only one step required.

Step 3:

Follow the on screen instructions. Sign in if need be.

NO ADDITIONAL STEPS ARE REQUIRED –> :D

You should end up at your applications page:

Facebook Applications Page

Step 4 (TO POST):

To update your facebook status from twitter,

Sign in to twitter, your mobile twitter application, or whatever method you have been using.

Type a regular tweet.

Add a #fb to the end of your twitter tweet, as such:

the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog #fb

And voila. Your facebook status will be your last tweet with the #fb tag. It should display: “YOUR NAME”the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog

*KEEP A SPACE before the #fb

Step 5 (Removing Application)

To remove either application, click on http://www.facebook.com/editapps.php to access your facebook applications page and proceed from there.

NOTE

Selective Facebook Application - Warning

Delete or disable all other twitter to facebook applications in order to ensure they do not end up posting unwanted tweets, thereby causing a huge fireball of death.

Benefits of the application:

Selective Facebook Application - Benefits

My iPhone essentially becomes a facebook status remote of sorts.

Issues:

Given the way facebook status messages are phrased (Your Name is …), updating from twitter becomes slightly awkward. You could either tweet normally, but with your fb statuses leaving out the ‘is’ bit, or start your tweets with ‘is’ (at least the ones you use for your fb status messages) in order to keep your facebook looking proper.

It was worse with the default application I was using initially, since everything went directly to facebook.

Here’s the link again:

Selective Twitter App for Facebook

Hope you found it useful. Cheers :)

Will this work if my twitter account is protected/private?

    hi there,

thanks for the post! apparently it does not work…

neither does the only other option i know of, namely the more popular ‘Twitter for Facebook’ application.

the latter gives an error message when i tried reinstalling it, in order to answer your query:

To add the Twitter application, you need to log into your Twitter account.
    Oops! Something went wrong:

    * Protected Twitter users may not use the Facebook application for privacy reasons. Please visit the account settings page on Twitter and uncheck the “Protect my updates” box if you would like to use this application.

am guessing twitter’s security blanket really does prevent any external access to your twitter feed, including authorised third party applications. so i doubt there are any other solutions out there, short of an official facebook-twitter tie up, that will allow you to link a protected feed with facebook’s status.

Heys Daniel, thanks for the post.

However, that’s for twitter’s official app which doesn’t allow for selective posting…

A couple of thoughts were detailed here http://cogito.faii.net/twitter-to-facebook/ on the same method you described above.

But thanks again for the suggestion.

    Cheers ;)

If you use this website to follow and update your Twitter feed, it allows you to choose which posts to send up to Facebook and which only go to your Twitter page.

I’m problems just updating my facebook page from twitter. I don’t want to update my profile status, but I do want to update my facebook page status from twitter. Any ideas?

    cheers

    Hi Christoire,

Not too sure what the difference is between the facebook page status and the profile status.

Could you enlighten me on that?

And we can then figure out an appropriate solution together.

    Hi Susan,

Thanks for the heads up. These few weeks of intermittent usage of tweet3 isn’t turning out so well.

It’s great for users who access twitter mainly from their computers. Works great at consolidation, however i still prefer the #fb method since it un-tethers me from the devices i use.

Personally, for my usage, an iPhone with Twinkle and #fb works fine :)

but a useful suggestion nonetheless. thanks!

I have a similar problem to what Christoire has alluded to

I have a personal page/profile, which I update my status on periodically.

Under the same account, I have a Business Page (Pedigree Consultants LLC). Now the issue I have is that my twitter account is for my business. I want the twitter updates to update the status on the business page, but NOT my personal profile page. At the moment, whatever twitter app I have used, updates my personal page/profile which is not what I want.

    Any ideas?

  • faii (author) said:

    Hi Bryon,

Well i’m not the developer, however my guess is that this application is simply a bridge between your twitter account and whichever facebook account you have linked it with. If your business page is mated to your personal account, which in turn is linked to your business account, the prognosis isn’t good.

As an end user, this particular app is not as sophisticated as many would like to have. Checked the application page and guess you could tweet the developer at @andyy.

A personal suggestion would be to create a business account and link that with twitter. That’s another reason why people have dedicated business facebook accounts in order to simplify usage of various applications. For example, the Huddle collaborative account i’m using would be rather messy if i shared it with both my business and personal profiles. Drawing the line between personal and professional accounts and spending time upfront to personalise both profiles is worth the hassle later on when the delineation between business and personal activities become hazy. I’m sure in the the near future facebook will begin to host more and more business apps.

    Hope that helped!

    Cheers

    Fantastic!

I love that this app also lets me control which FB pages (that I administer) will be updated with my tweets.

I do wish there were a way to direct certain tweets to certain FB pages I administer.

  • same prob said:

I also cannot get the tweets from twitter.com to update ONLY my FB business “page”… it updates the status for my personal FB feed/profile instead. Annoying! Esp as I only have the twitter/FB app installed on the business page. Interestingly, the first time I clicked “allow twitter to update FB” it gave me a choice of updated business or personal (page or profile) It say update (my name) or (business name) from a drop down menu. Of course, I clicked off the business page… but twitter wouldnt update. So i clicked it off again, this time no choice… twitter updated.. MY personal profile. Again, annoying. I took it all off, started again, but this time, the app did not give me a choice between the two. All subsequent allows made my personal FB profile stauts change. Looks mighty strange to friends and family to business tweet on my FB profile… similarly, it doesnt help me connect with business associates on FB if they have to look at my profile and business page does not update. Clearly, the app is not sophisticated, or has a bug (I’ll go with bug, bc of the choice issue it presented at first). Any help appreciated!

I too have had the same exact experience as described by “same prob.” I would love for twitter to update my public page and not my personal profile but the option to choose which page (public or personal) to update was only available the very first time I installed the application.

If anyone has any suggestions (aside from setting up a new account for my public/business page) I would love to hear them.

  • Don Cook said:

I’ve been messing with our business ‘page’ the past few days trying to get the status of that page, not my personal profile, to be manipulated by the twitter app.

The reason I’m chiming in here…at some point, either by chance or by some screwy sequence in which I attempted this, I was actually presented with a dropdown menu asking me which status I wanted Twitter app to update, then giving me options of either personal profile or that business page. I’ve since blown that setting out and can’t get it back. /cry

I’m wondering if I happened to hit this during intermittent testing of a new feature, or if I’m just losing my mind after deleting and re-adding the twitter app for the millionth time.

Has anyone else seen this dropdown option in settings, allowing them to choose which status to control?

does anyone know if there is a Twitter to FB feed app for Facebook pages (not profile)?

    Thanks

  • Hans said:

I have had no trouble syncing my Facebook Profile (the one with “Friends”), but the associated Facebook Page (the one with “fans”) does not seem to have any facility to link with Twitter.

Any suggestions on how I can set my Page to automatically update with my tweets?
