The Kids Nowadays

I’m joking with the choice of title for this post, but what i’m blogging on isn’t anything light-hearted.

Was at the junction 8 bus stop waiting for 156 after my gym sessions today.

Out of the corner of my eye i saw an old man try to stomp on some guy’s foot. The latter appeared to be about 17 to 18ish, and had his girlfriend with him. The kid (well, ok, i’m not physically that much older) immediately closed what little distance that remained between the two while challenging the skinny elderly man to a fight. Kid didn’t look like a punk at all, and his lady was very decently dressed. So oh well, push literally turned to shove.

It all happened just two meters in front of me, so at least the kid heard me when i raised my voice and told him to lay it off. Said the uncle ‘tried to kick’ him and tensions continued escalating. The uncle pocketed his spectacles and seemed all ready for the first blow. It was troublesome having to get up with my huge haversack and bathing towel (well it was raining when i walked from the gym), but had to do it to separate the both of them. Another RJ lady who was carrying two huge plastic bags of groceries tried holding the kid back while i had my hand across the uncle’s chest. And Silly Girlfriend didn’t seem to make any noise, other than just hold his hand. Not really sure if she tried pulling him back, but good dress sense doesn’t necessarily equate with the gall to do what’s right, though she did seem to say a couple of barely disapproving things as they finally walked away. But still holding onto his upper arm like couples do. Don’t turn the corners of your lips down. Tell him he’s an utter idiot and an embarrassment to you, that’s what you should do. Blimey.

The thousand and one other things besides the ‘dude, you’re clearly in the wrong’ and ‘be a gentleman’ didn’t come into play. A man’s ego is proportional to the pride of his girlfriend. Ah well, it was close.

Asking if the uncle was alright once the pair was gone, he related how the kid didn’t seem to let him or anyone past him as they got off the bus, even shoving some malay dude aside.

At this juncture, i am made to think: What Would Bern Do. Man, i’d actually pity the boy if she were there, or worse, his girlfriend.

And to all girlfriends out there, if your lad does something so foolish, please, in the following order: 1) pull him away, quickly 2) admonish and berate him severely SEVERELY. 3) dump him if need be. unless you’re obviously needy and clingy, petty guys don’t deserve any of your love. 3a) if you’re needy and clingy, i know it sounds wrong, but grow some balls.

Sigh. The kids of my generation.
