Britain's Bloodhound SSC

Britain’s 1000mph car has been unveiled in Bristol, as its bid to break the world land speed record gathers momentum.

Bloodhound SSC has gone through 10 design evolutions since October 2008 and the final design has now been agreed. The car’s first attempts at the record, which currently stands at 763mph, will take place on the Hakskeen Pan in Northern Cape Province of South Africa in 2011.

The car is powered by an EJ200 Eurofighter Typhoon jet engine and a 400kg rocket sitting below it. Bloodhound SSC produces the equivalent of 133,150bhp, the power of around 180 Formula One cars.

In the original plan, the 200kg rocket sat above the jet engine, but not enough thrust could be created to overcome the aerodynamic drag. This led to a 400kg rocket being used, but this caused the car to pitch nose-down, destabilising the vehicle. Engineers found the best compromise to be positioning the rocket below the jet engine.

The car’s 90cm-diameter wheels have been made from forged aerospace-grade aluminium to withstand the g-forces required of supporting a 6.5-tonne car travelling at 1050mph. The car will be driven by fighter pilot Andy Green and he has designed the cockpit himself.

One of the project’s greatest challenges has been finding a place suitable for the car to make its record attempt. The site needs to be 10 miles long and must have one mile of clear run-off at each end and be firm enough to support the weight of the car. Several locations, including the Bonneville Salt Flats in the US, were sounded out using Google Earth.

Hakskeen Pan was eventually found to be the best site; it is a 12-mile track across a perfectly flat dried-up lake. The record attempt is being supported by the Northern Cape Government.

So far, 166 sponsors have signed up to support the project. Public donations have also totalled more than £137,000, while 2410 schools have joined the project as part of its education programme.

Apparently, one can’t just be any megastar, in order to have a bespoke Ferrari. Your career has to be game-changing and soulful, thereby eliminating Beavers, Britneys and Cyruses. And as in the article below, Ferrari interviewed Clapton, which emphasised their enthusiasm in accommodating him…

I’m guessing that a car like the 458 was not designed to with any room for a bigger engine, so i wonder how difficult it would be to fit the heavier V12. Aston had a bit of trouble when they swapped the 4.3L V8 in the Vantage V8 for the 6L V12 in the DBS to produce the V12 Vantage. I too am guessing that a front-engined supercar has more space in the bonnet for the engine to ride further back and lower as the Aston, than a midengined vehicle as with the Ferrari.

Moreover, i’m sure the V12 would alter the balance and handling of the 458 significantly, and would it really be faster given the different weight-to power ratio?

But a what a noise it is sure to make, especially if they remove the exhaust baffles! It’s conceivable from the article below.

Maybe i should try to become a pop star instead of a surgeon…

When you’ve recorded as many platinum records, collaborated with as many big names and topped as many best-guitarists-of-all-time lists as Eric Clapton, you can get pretty much anything you want. And the ironically nicknamed Slowhand is known to have a taste for Ferraris. So much so that when he stopped by the factory in Maranello, even Ferrari couldn’t pass up the opportunity to interview him. 

Neither could Quattroruote, for that matter. While speaking with the Italian car-mag, Clapton reportedly professed his love for the new 458 Italia… with just one caveat: He’s not such a fan of eight cylinders. Could he get it with V12?

According to Quattroruote, apparently he can, as Ferrari has reportedly agreed to build it for him, with the 6.0-liter V12 from the 599 GTB Fiorano. We’ll believe it when we see it, which is pretty much exactly what we said the first time we heard the guitar riff on Layla.

I reckon that unfortunately this incredulous incident will hurt google more than it does the lady in the long run.

A woman who was hit by a car after walking on a highway in Los Angeles is suing Google.

Lauren Rosenberg claims she looked up a walking route on Google Maps on her Blackberry on 19 January last year.

The directions she was given included walking on a highway that has no pavement, but instead of seeking an alternate route she walked in the middle of the highway.

She was hit by a car and is suing Google for medical expenses amounting to $100,000 (£68,000), and for punitive damages. Rosenberg is also suing the driver who hit her.

Her court filing claims Rosenberg “was and is a competent adult” and lays full blame on Google and the driver.

I really have been away for too long – only found out about this insanely great advert through my rss reader.

I’m not so much amazed by the creativity as by the logistics that the BMW team put together.

After working with new media for a bit now, i believe these publicity events are more effective than single adverts in traditional media, which in turn include print and TV ads. That’s simply because these stunts that are unique and uncommon easily trigger a social media response from the people, from mobile snapshots to uploads on an iPhone. Given that the barriers to interpersonal communication are at an all time low with the proliferation of social networks, adverts of a physical nature have never been so powerful.

Case in point – the hype and coverage surrounding the launch of the iPhone and iPads were instrumental in effecting the large sale volumes that apple mustered in recent years. Social networks combined with a fanatical desire for the device ensured a self-sustaining movement that in turn led to more sales. And together with free coverage in news networks and other traditional media avenues, this could have been one of the greatest value-for-money marketing campaigns.

Either way, hope you enjoy the video. And if you’re Singaporean, hope it gets you all fuzzy as well. :)

London has just unveiled a revamped iteration of its iconic red Routemaster buses.

I’m actually quite happy to see it back in service and in spirit.

However, i do miss the open platforms at both the bow and stern of this veritable ferry.

Transport for London has released the first official images of the next-generation Routemaster bus.

The New Bus for London was inspired by an Autocar story in its Christmas edition in 2007; after new London mayor Boris Johnson adopted the idea, he launched a competition to create an official design.

The new bus, which will be built by Wrightbus in Northern Ireland, features extensive use of glass in a bid to give the interior a greater feeling of space. One of the most significant design touches is a pair of glass swoops at the rear and along the offside; TfL says these are to showcase the bus’s two staircases.

As envisaged by the original Autocar story, the new Routemaster has an open platform at the rear, bringing back the old model’s hop-on, hop-off principle. It will be closed during quieter periods of service, however.

TfL claims the new bus will be 15 per cent more efficient than existing hybrid buses, and 40 per cent more efficient than regular diesel double-deckers.

Speaking at the new bus’s launch, Johnson said, “This iconic new part of our transport system is not only beautiful, but also has a green heart beating beneath its stylish, swooshing exterior.

Know this is awfully trivial, but I noticed this contradiction in the papers today. It’s regarding the sold out Ferrari 599 GTO, which is essentially a bikini babe version of darth vader – drop dead gorgeous, lightweight but still very strong with the force.

The Straits Times (230410) in its automotive section mentions the 599 GTO’s SGD1.3 million price, and that this stallion is slated to be sold in Singapore.

However in its world news section, while covering the Chinese automotive market, it states that all instances of the GTO have been snapped up. Furthermore, almost every major automotive site has mentioned that each of the 599 cars produced had found owners by the day of its launch.

Much ado about nothing on my part!

What in the world is the most suave automotive manufacturer doing with a tiny rebadged miyagi car… (by the way, it’s called the iQ in nippon, which might signify something surprisingly lacking on the part of my dream marque>< )

I can’t help but think that by making it mandatory to already own an Aston before being allowed to purchase this little egg-on-wheels, it just mollycoddles those feel-good ecomentalists. Six days a week on the yacht that is a DBS, and one on this cygnet-dinghy, supposedly to save the world. And yes, on a dinghy.

It’s like those celebrities who buy a prius, or several (whatever for), to add a bit of pretty icing on a stable of big muscly horses.

And when here i am thinking that everything could only getting better with the DBS, the v12 vantage (oooh lala), the DBR9, and what not, it comes and poops a baby bird onto our laps. The world wants more power from aston’s asthmatic engines! It surely deserves a podium finish along with ferrari and lambo…

Now we all know why that Aston is the only manufacturer handing out Emotional Control Units to each customer.

Just realised that i haven’t posted anything recently (or even at all) on the automotive section of my blog.

So here’s something on my dream four wheel drive (other than that other four wheel fantasy of owning a DBS, with which i will take my future wife on tours around europe), the Koenigsegg CCXR Edition.

This car’s earlier predecessor, the CCR was the world’s fastest car till the Veyron came and ate it. There aren’t any official records of this CCXR reclaiming the title, but there have been rumours of unofficial tests that suggest that.

Anyways, here’s the wikipedia writeup:

In March 2008, two models – The CCX Edition and the CCXR Edition – were launched at the Geneva Motor Show.^[23] Both models are fitted with a remapped, 4.8 liter twin-supercharged Koenigsegg engine. The engine tune in the CCXR Edition is more powerful than that of the standard CCX, developing 1,018 bhp (759 kW) at 7000 rpm and 797 ft·lb (1,081 N·m) of torque at 5600 rpm. The CCX Edition develops 888 bhp (662 kW) at 7000 rpm and 679 ft·lb (921 N·m) of torque at 5800 rpm. In total the Edition produces over 772 lb (350 kg) of downforce at 155 mph (249 km/h).^[24]

The Edition CCXR and CCX are more track oriented compared to the standard models, being equipped with stiffer springs and anti-roll bars, reset dampers and a lowered chassis. The Edition CCXR and the CCX also feature a fully visible carbon body, a large adjustable rear wing, larger front splitter and side strakes and a unique forged wheel design.^[25]

The interior is also reworked and features: color matched leather carpets, Koenigsegg Edition side step plates, Edition chronograph instrument cluster, a new Edition only layout for the center console control panels, and features a special version of the Koenigsegg Chronocluster including a redesigned center console. All other extra equipment for the Koenigsegg Edition CCXR and CCX comes as standard: carbon wheels, special interior trim and color, rearview camera, Satnav or Bluetooth, amplifiers, complete Inconell exhaust system.

On March 19, 2009, Koenigesegg announced, via the Cars UK ^[26] site, that production of the CCXR Edition will be limited to just four cars, and that of the CCX Edition to only two. This was partly in response to the decline in the world economy, but also because Koenigsegg are now committed to an environmentally responsible future, as demosnstrated by the Quant, which was shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 2009.

It generates more horsepower than the Bugatti Veyron (1001hp @ 6000rpm) at slightly higher revs, though the hyper VW Beetle (afterall, Bugatti is owned by Volkswagen, and the Veyron does look like one) generates more torque (1250 Nm @ 2200 -5500rpm). However, the Veyron is significantly heavier (1888kg vs 1280kg). To put things in perspective, the smaller, lightweight Ferrari F430 Scuderia is only 1250kg. And what’s stunning is that Koenigsegg is only a small Swedish outfit that is easily many of orders of magnitude smaller than Bugatti, Ferrari or Lamborghini without the support of huge parents such as VW. Case in point – each Veyron costs 5 million GBP to make, after all that research, yet is sold for 1.2 million only, resulting in a loss of 3.8 million pounds per car (i’m not crapping this up). For that sort of money, man, something in the value analysis has gone way wrong.

From what i’ve read, the Bugatti is really a hyper GT than a race car. Heck, the Pagani Zonda F beat it on Top Gear’s track, which in turn was slower than the CCX (the older version of the CCXR). The Bugatti with it’s huge engine block (go google it to see how big the 8 litre engire is) and four wheel drive allows it to be extremely weighted and composed on the with loads of torque on an even delivery. The two wheeled Koenigsegg is apparently more twitchy and lively especially at high speeds.

But give me either and i’d die happy.

p.s. i particularly like the koenigsegg’s shade of orange but the raw carbon fibre of the Edition version is godly.

Given us superstitious Asians, i was quite surprised to discover that militaries do send their soldiers about on these vehicles. Wouldn’t be a jolly thing driving a vehicle, with the initials that could possibly stand for ‘Killed In Action’, into combat.

Is the black Stig back?

New YouTube video sparks rumours that the BBC’s Top Gear is bringing back the original Stig

New footage released on YouTube today shows the Black Stig, Top Gear’s original star driver, climbing out of the ocean, raising speculation that the BBC may consider bringing the character back after the current Stig’s identity was revealed last month.

The original Stig, the masked racing driver who became a household name, was the brainchild of Jeremy Clarkson when the programme was relaunched in 2002. The character was retired around the time he was identified as British racing driver Perry McCarthy. The Stig’s name was based on the monicker given to new boys at Clarkson’s school, Repton.

A press release that accompanied the video announced: “until now, the original Stig from BBC Top Gear was thought to have been killed back in 2003, when he drove a modified Jaguar XJS off the end of HMS Invincible aircraft carrier at 109mph. . . The nation was shocked that the Stig was dead. However, recent footage has been found on YouTube showing that he miraculously survived.”

Until he was unmasked few people apart from a handful of BBC production staff and journalists knew the true identity of the current white-suited Stig. The name of the Stig, beloved of the show’s hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, has been an open secret within the motoring world for some years, but the media have refrained from publishing his name to uphold the spirit of the programme.

Late last month, however, a newspaper outed Ben Collins, a Bristol-based former American speedway driver and stuntman, after following up a story in a Bristol newspaper about a man commissioning a photographic studio in the city to produce limited edition prints of the character.

Before Collins, Perry McCarthy played the Stig for 22 episodes of Top Gear, until his identity was revealed. McCarthy said he was the original Stig in the second edition of his autobiography Flat Out Flat Broke, which, contrary to popular belief, was published after the black Stig was retired.

Adding further layers of mystery to the legend of the Stig, the press release continues: “how he survived, nobody knows. Some believe he used the nitrous octane equipment from the Jag to breathe. Some believe he can communicate with dolphins and they cared for him. Has he returned because he can sense White Stig has had his identity exposed?”

It remains to be seen whether the BBC will consider a return to the former incarnation of the character or if this is little more than an elaborate hoax.

Aston V12 Vantage Front

This came in with the top gear newsletter just this fri. It is simply drop-dead gorgeous. An automotive little death. Up yours ford (former owner) e il italiano! Aston’s had prototypes, but i’m guessing this is it.

This still looks rather small in the pictures, as with the normal V8 Vantage. But trust me, in real life, the baby aston is very VERY imposing. It’s bonnet is pretty wide. And oh, those LED headlights!

I always think astons should always come in gunmetal gray. Icky colours like this (it’s the original concept prototype):

don’t quite cut the mustard. Astons are driven by Bond, not Austin Powers. The low ride height, side crease, subtle flared side skirts and it’s cabin to bonnet proportions just make it look ever more so the track rocket. Gosh, i can’t take my eyes off it.

However, the new photos seem to indicate a lack of a rear spoiler. Thought the prototype’s pop-up one looked quite cute.

And now i’m just fantasising about it exhaust. Would so dearly love to hear it in person. The prototype had an uprated DB9 V12, producing 600bhp thereabouts, shoehorned into the engine bay. The current one produces only 510bhp apparently. Powerful, but a somewhat disappointing considering what was inside originally. Recall an article stating the prototype’s power to weight ratio to be higher than a Ferrari 599. But i suppose with the new specs, it’s anticipated monstrosity has lost some shine.

Personally i’m wondering how they’ve managed not only to fit the bigger V12 in a bay meant for a V8, it’s amazing how they’ve come up even more wiggle room to ensure the engine block is low and essentially sufficiently deep to ensure optimal balanace and handling.

Aside from that, this will be a track monster. Look at those vents on the bonnet. It’s as if this iteration has levelled up from a bluefin to a shark. I can’t wait for people to put it through it’s paces on a track and see how it compares to ferraris and lambos. Oh man, this has really good odds.

Also, i’d pick this over the DBS anytime. Though both are astons, and that the DBS has a more aggressive front with all those bumpers and curves and scoops, this is clearly the powerpup. Though smaller, which is a niggling consideration, the Vantage V12 thus has a much higher power to weight ratio as compared to the DBS. However, the DBS is the romantic holiday cruiser but part time bruiser, while this, i reckon, is hard and stiff and perpetually on the overly-masculine side of things. Look at that humongous front splitter! It’s true that factory specced cars with huge front splitters often forebear brutal performance. I is like, very, very much. It’s still a two seater like it’s bigger brother, and has roughly the same lines, so there’s not much else to consider in deciding which one. However, the DBS has all the romantic things about it. The DBS is like Sean Connery at the end of the movie – i.e. with a girl in his arms, paragliding (or something like that) into the sunset. His strength is well tempered under his immaculate suit. This bulldog of a Vantage is, well, Jean Claude van Dame – has looks that could kill, and looks like it would kill.

Yet, this latest aston is just so taut and tight. That’s exactly what you get by looking at the rear shot below. Strangely, it’s almost like an embodiment of human sexiness. The gloss does for cars what oil and strong direct light does for a pinup model. For me it translates into a virtual, though tactile, emotive experience. Look at the ever-so-slightly turned wheel. Combined with those haunches and shadows it makes me say ‘hotness!’. So coy, so notty!

Anyways, two things i’d wish they’d do:

1. Nicer rims. Though the ones in the pics are better over the standard ones, astons deserve something on par with lambo.
2. More aggressive rear styling. I’m not a huge fan of ferrari, but the Scuderia 430’s crazy rear diffusers are just so ogle-worthy. We like bums that go RAWR!, don’t we?
